Taiwan Officially Lists British Columbia As Province Of China

THE government of Taiwan’s official website has quietly changed the its designation of British Columbia to a “province of China”.

The change was spotted by users on Twitter who noticed that the Taiwanese government’s foreign studies webpage now lists the University of British Columbia as “UBC, British Columbia (Province of China)”.

Earlier this week UBC listed Taiwan as a province of China and blamed their recent adoption of new ISO data standards as the cause. According to a leading Taiwanese government official this change also caused a computer glitch on their servers too leading to the unfortunate mix-up.

He denied the change was motivated by revenge stating that it was “likely just a simple computing error on UBC’s end perhaps due their overreliance on Huawei technology”.

“We only adopted the ISO standards for financial reasons, ” he added. “We’re sure UBC will understand this motivation.”

So there can be no further confusion about the issue, the Taiwanese government have sent an apology letter to the board of UBC written in Mandarin and translated into Cantonese.

This is not the only political misstep UBC has taken in recent years. In 2016 the university caused controversy when it referred to Hong Kong as “Should-Be Province of China” and again in 2019 when it referred to Alberta as a province of Canada.
